COMMUNITY OUTREACH & PARTNERSHIP

  • COMMUNITY OUTREACH & PARTNERSHIP
After reviewing local data about the population of students from multicultural backgrounds, AVP knew it
could not fully accomplish its mission without  serious community  collaboration.  AVP has reached out
to the greater Fayette Community to seek strategic partnerships to address some of the issues that were
identified through the collection and analysis of local data and information.  It is through the new
partnerships that AVP seeks to expand its capacity to serve students and their families, while addressing
issues of academic achievement, healthy behavior choices, and post-secondary options.

  • HARMONY VILLAGE FAMILY LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER
At the Harmony Village Apartments in Peachtree City, AVP sponsors a family learning center for
residents of the complex.  The center has computers with Internet access and printers.  AVP staffs the
center and works with the residents to identify program opportunities that would help both adult sand
students in a variety of skill development areas
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

  • READING RIGHT (at Harmony Village)

AVP sponsors an after-school reading program for elementary age students residing in Harmony Village
to help improve reading skills.  This is done through book-clubs, computer assisted learning, drama and
reading skill assessment.  AVP provides staff but continually seeks community volunteers to give
students one-on-one attention.

  • BRIDGES PROGRAM (at Harmony Village)

AVP in partnership with Rising Starr Middle School and Harmony Properties provides volunteers,
tutors, and access to computers and Internet to support middle school students residing at
Harmony Village and attending Rising Starr Middle School

  • RITES OF PASSAGE (Middle School Program)

This all year curriculum based program was created to help middle school students develop an
awareness of themselves, their history as well as teaching them how to make healthy choices. This
program includes cultural field trips, an annual ski trip, community service projects, and leadership skills
development opportunities.

  • YOUTH LEADERS  (High School Program)
This program specifically designed for high school students focuses on the further cultivation of
leadership skills and involvement in community service.  Community leaders and school personnel help
identify students who meet the standards for participation in this program.  Youth Leaders serve as
mentors and role models for younger students.  They provide leadership in the sponsoring of a number
of community-wide events.  Through this program students learn to take responsibility for their lives
through positive actions and behavior.  Students also learn to see themselves as future leaders.
HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION
In the fall of 1996 a group of Fayette County citizens Through 2-6 week internships, this program
allows students to explore their career interest.  Participating students must complete job readiness
training that includes, work place etiquette, resume writing and interview techniques.  Students are
then matched with local work sites to explore career fields within their interest. F
rom a variety of
backgrounds came together to discuss what could be done as parents and community members to help
our children prepare themselves to be successful in the global economy.  Questions that immediately
came up were:  What skills and attributes do our children need to possess to be competitive in the 21st
century?  How can we provide the kind of support through both their formal education and social
development to help our children successfully negotiate their environment and become productive
contributing members of society?

For over a year the group explored the issues that students were experiencing in Fayette County.  A
parent/student forum was held so that parents and students could share their concerns and to discuss
possible solutions.  The students in particular spoke in great detail about the challenges they faced
growing up and being educated in Fayette County.

The Association of Village PRIDE (People Respecting the Identity Development in Everyone)
Incorporated was created to help address the issues voiced by students and parents.  In May of 1998
AVP became a  501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  AVP currently seeks and receives grants and
donations to fund its mission.
