COMMUNITY OUTREACH & PARTNERSHIP

After reviewing local data about the population of students from multicultural backgrounds, AVP knew
it could not fully accomplish its mission without  serious community  collaboration.  AVP has reached
out to the greater Fayette Community to seek strategic partnerships to address some of the issues that
were identified through the collection and analysis of local data and information.  It is through the new
partnerships that AVP seeks to expand its capacity to serve students and their families, while addressing
issues of academic achievement, healthy behavior choices, and post-secondary options.

At the Concord Village Apartments in Peachtree City, AVP sponsors a family learning center for
residents of the complex.  The center has computers with Internet access and printers.  AVP staffs
the center and works with the residents to identify program opportunities that would help both
adult sand students in a variety of skill development areas.
HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION
In the fall of 1996 a group of Fayette County citizens from a variety of backgrounds came together to
discuss what could be done as parents and community members to help our children prepare themselves
to be successful in the global economy.  Questions that immediately came up were:  What skills and
attributes do our children need to possess to be competitive in the 21st century?  How can we provide
the kind of support through both their formal education and social development to help our children
successfully negotiate their environment and become productive contributing members of society?

For over a year the group explored the issues that students were experiencing in Fayette County.  A
parent/student forum was held so that parents and students could share their concerns and to discuss
possible solutions.  The students in particular spoke in great detail about the challenges they faced
growing up and being educated in Fayette County.

AVP Incorporated was created to help address the issues voiced by students and parents.  In May of
1998 AVP became a  501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  AVP currently seeks and receives grants and
donations to fund its mission.
